Migration and the Media

  • Baraza Media Lab Keystone Park, 95 Riverside Drive Block B, 2nd Floor, Nairobi Kenia (map)

Most African migrants, refugees and asylum seekers arriving in Europe have done so by taking on dangerous journeys across the Mediterranean Sea. As bodies pile up beneath oceans and upon Western shores, the world has been quick to call this a "migration crisis." Yet the real issue has been the uneven and often thoughtless coverage of migrants in the media, in particular the European media’s coverage about African migrants. Why are migrant perspectives excluded from mainstream media? Who really gets to tell migrants' stories? Panellists will discuss the challenges of reporting on migration and consider how migrant voices can be better heard.

Join us on Thursday 12 March at Baraza Media Lab Nairobi for this panel discussion exploring these issues chaired by Abdi Latif Dahir, with contributions from Bhakti Shringarpure, Ismail Einashe, Stella Suge and Max Bearak.

The panel will commence around 6.30pm. And the Baraza Media Lab space will be open from 5.30pm for snacks and beverages (cash and Mpesa only).
