ECF is proud to support The School of the Displaced, presented at the School of Kyiv, starting in Ukraine on 8 September 2015 and curated by Hedwig Saxenhuber & Georg Schöllhammer. This biennial which will take place in a variety of settings in the city of Kiev, unites the efforts of artists, intellectuals, civil society initiatives and institutions in Ukraine, Europe and beyond. The anchor Ukrainian institution of the biennale is 2015 ECF Princess Margriet Award for Culture Laureate Visual Culture Research Centre (VCRC).
About The School of the Displaced.
Internally displaced people will gather and share their experiences with artists who have become refugees for political reasons; they will work together with civic initiatives to explore how displacement can be political resistance and self-definition. The musician Rami Essam (Egypt – Sweden), “the voice of Tahrir Square”; Helge Lunde (Norway), the Head of the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN); the artists Ahmet Ögüt (Turkey), Milica Tomić (Serbia), Marina Naprushkina (Belarus), and Adelita Husni-Bey (Libya – Italy) are just a few of the fellows of the School. The School is co-curated by Marita Muukkonen and Ivor Stodolsky (Perpetuum Mobile, Finland – Germany).
The biennale aims at creating an alternative space of reflection, breaking down barriers, and building bridges in the time of warfare. Incorporating exhibitions and performances, film, multimedia experiments and broadcasts, and integrating permanent and open situations of learning and reflecting, “The School of Kyiv” involves individual artists and artistic
communities with diverse backgrounds from all over the world, with a special focus on the dialogue between art and society. Beyond this, in cooperation with local and international institutions the biennial will create sustainable structures and catalyse knowledge transfer outside of Kiev. One of our main goals is to keep channels of artistic and intellectual exchange open in a moment of closure.
