At ECF, we firmly believe in the power of culture to connect communities and revitalise democracy. Our work is full of examples of culture catalysing change – reminding us that culture is needed more now than ever before.

Last year was a dark year for Europe – punctuated by violence from beginning to end – memories that will remain seared in our collective consciences.

The challenges facing Europe may seem daunting, and yet we are resolute in our conviction that we can realise a sustainable, open and inclusive Europe by drawing on the power of culture and understanding. Encounter, exchange and solidarity among cultural change-makers working in often different contexts – sometimes in harsh political or social realities, but addressing similar challenges – remain the key guiding principles in all of our work.

In the face of adversity, we look towards 2016 with conviction, optimism and heartfelt gratitude to all of our partners. Europe has faced challenges and crises before and will no doubt again. However, we are committed to doing our utmost to putting culture at the centre of Europe’s endeavours – and we hope you will be with us on that journey, not paralysed by fear but driven by hope that, together, we can build a better Europe…
