Report: Beyond the Nation State – Cultures make Europe

On the occasion of its 60th anniversary, ECF decided to reexamine the convictions of its founding father Denis de Rougemont, by the presentation of his 1947 speech “The federalist attitude” by former ECF Secretary General Raymond Georis and relate the passages to today’s EU by French Liberal Member of the European Parliament, Sylvie Goulard. In the following report, Sabine Frank highlights the key themes of the event that took place on 6 November 2014 at BOZAR in Brussels.

Historical Speech debate at BOZAR: photos and audio

On 6 November, Raymond Georis reflected on the ideas of Denis De Rougemont by reading out parts of his speech The Federalist Attitude dating from 1947, at the Historic Speech to Europe debate at BOZAR. Sylvie Goulard, member of the European Parliament, commented on this speech from a contemporary European perspective and placed it in the context of current EU developments. A Q&A session with the floor followed, including students in European studies. The event was moderated by Vanessa Mock, EU correspondent for the Wall Street Journal in Brussels. Engaging the World: Towards a Global Cultural Citizenship.

As a member of the Consortium supporting the Preparatory Action “Culture in EU External Relations” initiative, we joined more than 350 international artists, academics and cultural representatives to discuss the results of the “Preparatory Action” on developing an EU strategy to mobilise the potential of culture in external relations. The discussions and feedback from the conference are now integrated in the final report which is available on the Culture in EU External Relations website
